What material should I choose for a shipping base-layer?
Merino wool offers excellent insulation and natural odor management, ideal for long expeditions. Synthetic fibers, lighter and more resistant, dry faster and are suitable for intensive use.
What thickness should I choose for a base layer?
For winter or high-altitude expeditions, opt for a heavier weight (200 g/m² or more). For mid-season or intense activity, a thinner version (150 g/m²) is sufficient to keep you dry without overheating.
Can a thermal underlay be worn for several days at a time?
Yes, as long as you choose an odor-resistant model (merino or specific treatment). This makes it ideal for independent raids or high-mountain bivouacs.
What's the difference between a hunting and an expedition base-layer?
Both share the same thermal criteria, but expedition base-layers are lighter, quicker-drying and more compatible with multiple layers under heavy physical stress (pack, harness, climb).
How do I wash thermal underwear for expeditions?
In self-sufficient conditions, a rinse in lukewarm water is sufficient. At home, wash cold, without fabric softener, and leave to dry flat. Avoid tumble-drying to preserve fiber structure.
